WHAT GOES WITH CHICKEN SCHNITZEL
2 MENUS WITH CHICKEN SCHNITZEL

Should I serve a Salad or Vegetables with Chicken Schnitzel?
What side dish goes with Schnitzel?

Schnitzel is an Austrian dish which has been adopted all over the world, in Argentina it is called Milanesa and you would think it is their national dish, every restaurant and every dinner party feature a Milanesa it is as popular as their famous Parrilla. Very popular also in Israel often served inside a Pita with Hummus.
What could be the secret of their popularity? It is labor intensive to produce but the supermarkets have come out with mass production of Schnitzel already pounded, moisten and breaded, fresh or frozen and one can just warm it up in a microwave or oven.
Different countries have their preferences as to which side dish to serve it with. Most agree to serve it with potatoes. The difference is mashed or french fries.
As it is a fairly dry dish, a salad or some vegetables are welcome.
Both menus have a salad as a starter that can be left on the table to mix with the Schnitzel.
Some dish have a multitude of sides that can be appealing, the Schnitzel to me is the exception. It can only be matched with Mash potatoes and peas.
For dessert one can be more flexible and a fruit dessert or a fruit tart could finish the meal.

MENU 1
A Coleslaw Salad as a Starter.
A Main Course with Chicken Schnitzel and Baked Mash Potatoes and Peas as Side Dish
A Fruit Salad for Dessert
A menu that can be prepared a day before as it has only the fruit salad to make on the day.

The Coleslaw Salad is enough to serve on its own as a starter as the main course is quite substantial. It is better made a day before as the mayonnaise dressing mixed together with the cabbage is enhanced with a day in the fridge.
The Chicken Schnitzel can be crumbed a day before and baked on the day or bought already crumbled. The mash potato can also be made a day before, place it on a pyrex in the fridge and just spread some thin slices of butter on top and bake it on the day.
It's amazing what caramelized onions can do to a can of peas. A great dish in just few minutes.
If a big crowd, a fruit salad is ideal, otherwise serve some fruit in season.

You may want to make an easier fruit tart, the Apricot Jam Tart is as delicious
MENU 2
You may want to replace the Coleslaw Salad with a Caprese Salad with Tomato, Mozzarella, Origanum and Basil and the Fruit Salad with an Apple Tart Tatin

The Caprese Salad is very simple. The Tart Tatin is a fairly complicated tart to make, but once you master it, it will be one of those "prefered" dessert. It can be done with many other fruit.
